Rituximab-cyclophosphamide-dexamethasone combination in the management of autoimmune cytopenias associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia

Rossignol J, Michallet AS, Oberic L et al.
Claude Huriez University Hospital, Lille, France.
Leukemia 2011;25:473–8.

Editor’s note: Autoimmune complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are frequent. Hemolysis (autoimmune hemolytic anemia [AIHA]), idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and red cell aplasia, can all represent a therapeutic challenge, particularly in the event of steroid-refractoriness.
This study describes a CLL-focused treatment protocol, employed in 48 patients with CLL requiring treatment for autoimmune disease (AID): AIHA in 54%, ITP in 19%, Evans syndrome in 17%, and pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) in 11%.
