Complete response correlates with long-term progression-free and overall survival in elderly myeloma treated with novel agents: analysis of 1175 patients

Gay F, Larocca A, Wijermans P et al.

Blood 2011;117:3025–31.

Editor’s note: In patients eligible for high-dose therapy and autologous transplantation for the treatment of myeloma, the achievement of complete response (CR) or at least very good partial response (VGPR) is associated with prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS; J Clin Oncol 2008;26:5775–82). Before the advent of novel agents such as thalidomide and bortezomib, CR was rare and the impact of achieving CR on disease-free survival (DFS) and OS was unclear.
