Editor’s note: Information gained from clinical trials in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is highly informative for those patients who do not differ from those enrolled in the study populations. However, many patients with AML are never enrolled into a clinical trial, partly owing to inclusion and exclusion criteria based on factors such as age, prior chemotherapy, performance status, and organ dysfunction. For these patients, there is far more limited information in the published literature upon which to base clinical decisions.
