Editor’s note: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous disease. Cytogenetic profile is the most powerful predictor of survival but molecular changes are becoming increasingly important in risk stratification. Ecotropic viral integration site 1 (EVI1) is found to be highly expressed in approximately 8% of de novo AML cases and although associated with the chromosomal abnormalities inv(3)(q21q26.2) or t(3;3)(q21;q26.2), high levels are more often found in AML without such rearrangements. The clinical impact of high EVI1 expression in groups without chromosome 3q26.2 abnormalities has thus far been inconclusive, partly due to sample sizes.
