Editor’s note: The International Prognostic Index (IPI), first published in 1993, enabled prognostic stratification of four groups of patients with high-grade B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (HG B-NHL) based on five risk factors (age, lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], performance status, stage, and number of extranodal sites). This score has been widely applied and validated across a number of conventional and dose-intensive chemotherapy regimens. Since that time, the addition of rituximab to chemotherapy for such patients has been shown to significantly improve survival.
