Assessment of lung-cancer mortality reduction from CT screening.

Henschke CI, Boffetta P, Gorlova O et al.
The I-ELCAP (International Early Lung Cancer Action Project) estimated that 80% of patients who are diagnosed with lung cancer following computed tomography (CT) screening achieve long-term cure (N Engl J Med 2006;355:1763–71). However, concerns exist that indolent tumors are detected by CT screening that would not have caused the death of the patient even if left untreated, leading to overdiagnosis and unnecessary intervention and treatment.
