Sublobar resection provides an equivalent survival after lobectomy in elderly patients with early lung cancer.

Okami J, Ito Y, Higashiyama M et al.
Although lobectomy is the current standard of care for even small lung cancers, many believe that sublobar resection may be equivalent for peripheral cancers ≤ 2 cm in size or for patients with elevated perioperative risk, such as reduced lung function or advanced age. This report, from a group in Osaka, Japan, who are very skilled in sublobar resection, retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of sublobar and lobar resection in young (aged <75 years) and elderly patients.
