Ioannis Gounaris, MRCP, and Hugo ER Ford, MD, FRCP

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung (LCNEC) is a rare subtype of lung cancer, accounting for approximately 3% of all lung carcinomas. According to the current World Health Organization (WHO) classification system, it is considered to be a subtype of large-cell NSCLC [1]. However, its aggressive clinical behavior, neuroendocrine phenotype, and poor prognosis have much in common with SCLC. The present article will provide an overview of the pathological classification, biological characteristics, incidence, and presentation of LCNEC before reviewing the treatment options for this tumor.
