Editor’s note: The cancer stem cell hypothesis has generated intense interest in the world of oncology both for the potential to explain chemotherapy resistance and as a potential new target for therapy. Cancer stem cells have been identified in multiple different tumor types, including NSCLC, on the basis of their potential to propagate the tumor phenotype in vivo (i.e. promote tumor growth following orthotopic transplantation in mice).
