Mitochondrial changes within axons in multiple sclerosis.
Mahad DJ, Ziabreva I, Campbell G et al.
There is increasing evidence that mitochondria play a role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). The inner mitochondrial membrane contains the respiratory chain that allows the conversion of oxygen to water and production of adenosine-5'-triphosphate, which is necessary for a normal nerve impulse transmission. The terminal component of this chain is complex IV or cytochrome c oxidase.
