The relation between inflammation and neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis brains.

Frischer JM, Bramow S, Dal-Bianco A et al.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been traditionally considered an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. However, this view has recently been challenged in the medical literature with increasing recognition of the importance of the neurodegenerative component of the disease, particularly in the more progressive subtypes. The importance of the neurodegenerative aspect has been further supported by the apparent lack of efficacy of the potent immunomodulatory drugs used in relapsing remitting and more progressive subtypes of MS. The interaction between inflammation and neurodegeneration remains unclear.
