Oral fingolimod or intramuscular interferon for relapsing multiple sclerosis.

Cohen JA, Barkhof F, Comi G et al.; TRANSFORMS Study Group.
Editor’s note: Current multiple sclerosis (MS) treatments require parenteral application and all have certain disadvantages. Standard disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) using interferon-beta (IFN-β) preparations or glatiramer acetate suppress disease activity in only a proportion of patients. The humanized monoclonal anti-α4-integrin antibody natalizumab has greater efficacy, but treatment with this therapy can lead to progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, a potentially lethal disease. The search for novel MS treatments is therefore ongoing.
