Editor’s note: The use of currently available magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques has revolutionized the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and has provided a surrogate marker for disease activity in this condition. Many MRI groups are now working on improving the detection of demyelinating plaques and abnormalities in normal-appearing areas of brain tissue, as well as accurately monitoring brain atrophy. It is likely that these new techniques will advance the usefulness and capabilities of MRI in the coming years.
