Editor’s note: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a common and often distressing neurological condition that results in an uncomfortable sensation and compulsion to move one’s legs, often accompanied by sensory symptoms in the lower limbs. It can lead to depression and a marked impairment in sleep patterns. Agreed diagnostic criteria were established by the International RLS Study Group (
Sleep Med 2003;4:101–19)
. RLS can be idiopathic or secondary to a number of associated conditions including iron deficiency, neuropathies, and Parkinson’s disease. It is important to recognize RLS early, as effective treatments do exist.
