Editor’s note: Several investigations have reported a lower lifetime risk of developing cancer in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients compared with age-matched controls within the same population, but contradictory data have emerged from other studies. It has been proposed that genetic factors predisposing to the development of MS might also be responsible for the lower risk of developing cancers. This issue of cancer risk in MS has once again become important as many of the new and emerging therapies for MS carry with them an increased risk of certain malignancies.
