Editor’s note: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for depicting central nervous system tissue in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) continue to advance, with many new strategies currently under investigation. In recent years the concept of imaging and monitoring normal appearing white matter (NAWM) has emerged; investigators previously monitored lesion load only. This is an interesting development as the correlation between the extent of white matter lesions and disability progression in MS is moderate, at best.
