Editor’s note: Genome-wide association studies test many hundreds of thousands of markers in samples from patients and controls simultaneously, and the allelic frequencies of each marker are compared between the two groups to determine its association with the disease in question. However, because of the statistical corrections that need to be performed, markers often do not reach the chosen threshold disease association level, despite being important from a pathogenesis point of view.
