Editor’s note: The disparity between white matter lesions on traditional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and the extent of disability and disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) has long been established. Recently, improved MRI techniques and the availability of higher field scanners have allowed more meaningful study of other regions of interest in the brain of MS patients, including gray matter and normal-appearing white matter. Regional volume loss has also been suggested as a potential marker for axonal loss using some of these techniques.
