Editor’s note: Myelin is an electrically insulating membrane formed by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. It ensheathes axons, enabling more rapid transmission of nerve impulses. Loss of the myelin sheath leads to neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
