Editor’s note: Reasons behind the development of multiple sclerosis (MS) remain unknown. Despite decades of genetic studies on possible susceptibility genes and the proposal of numerous environmental triggers for the condition, no single gene or environmental agent has consistently been associated with the development of MS. MS is now believed to be a complex condition in which a range of genetic susceptibility loci and environmental agents combine to result in development of the disease.
