Editor’s note: Multiple sclerosis (MS) predominantly affects women of childbearing age and counseling MS patients regarding pregnancy risks is an essential aspect of their treatment. Available data indicate that – apart from possible adverse effects of MS treatments – pregnancy in MS patients is not associated with an increased risk of fetal malformations or perinatal complications. MS patients are therefore not warned to avoid pregnancy due to their disease; however, patients should be made aware that relapse rates are lower during pregnancy, but increase after delivery.
