Editor’s note: Longitudinal brain imaging studies have demonstrated evidence for progressive loss of gray matter in the brains of patients with schizophrenia. However, it is unlikely that such brain matter loss is linear over the course of the illness. According to the authors of the present study, the progression of brain volume changes probably follows a complex trajectory over time, depending on the state of the illness.
