Viral encephalitis is a multidimensional infection

MARJALEENA KOSKINIEMI

Interest in infections of the central nervous system (CNS) increases when new microbes emerge – for example, polio in the 1950s, herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) in the 1970s, and numerous rare encephalitides that have emerged more recently with the increasing use of immunosuppression. In particular, the US outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) encephalitis in the late 1990s stimulated enormous interest in CNS infections.
