Editor’s note: This interesting article makes a modest contribution to the few microarray studies performed on surgically resected hippocampus specimens from patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). In a novel experimental design, the authors used a three-way comparison of hippocampi samples from TLE patients with and without hippocampus sclerosis (HS) and autopsy controls to control for the effects of disease pathology on the expression of genes implicated in epilepsy. They found that chemokine genes, particularly CCL3 and CCL4, were highly upregulated in patients with chronic TLE.
