Editor’s note: To date, the following “onconeuronal” antibodies have a well-characterized association with paraneoplastic disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system: anti-Hu (ANNA1), Yo (PCA1), CV2 (CRMP5), Ri (ANNA2), Ma2 (Ta), and amphiphysin antibodies (J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 2004;75:1135–40). Testing for these antibodies may permit a positive diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS), even in the setting of occult malignancy. Of these six specific antibodies, the most recently described is the anti-Ma/Ta antibody. Anti-Ma sera recognize paraneoplastic antigens Ma1 and Ma2 (PNMA1 and PNMA2, respectively), whereas anti-Ta sera react to PNMA2 alone.
