Editor’s note: The absence of a structural basis for diagnosing insanity was part of the original definition of the “functional psychoses” – including schizophrenia and manic-depressive (bipolar) disorder. The original students of these conditions assumed, however, that as technology improved, evidence of organic brain damage would be identified in people who suffer from these conditions.
