The Late Medical Complications of Severe Acquired Brain Injury in Children – Literature Review and Personal Practice. Part 1: Neurological Complications

Serena Haywood, MB, BS, BSc, MRCPCH, MSc

The number of children with acquired brain injuries (ABI) per year is not fully known. ABI are usually categorized into two etiological groups: traumatic brain injuries (TBI; for example, due to road traffic accidents, falls, and non-accidental injury) and atraumatic or non-traumatic brain injuries (due to factors such as meningitis, encephalitis, cerebral tumors, and cardiac arrest). The number of children with TBI is estimated to be 280 per 100 000 children per year [1].
