Editor’s note: Tear hyperosmolarity is regarded as the central mechanism behind dry eye and arises as a result of water evaporation from exposed ocular surface, related to either aqueous tear deficiency or excessive evaporation. Tear hyperosmolarity stimulates a cascade of inflammatory events. Hypo-osmotic agents have been developed and studied for the treatment of dry eye. The authors of this study evaluated two types of artificial tears, both containing 0.4% hyaluronic acid in an aqueous solution, but with different osmolarity – one was isotonic and the other hypotonic.
