Editor’s note: This study was conducted to evaluate the visual outcome of patients with combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (CHRRPE) based on macular versus extramacular tumor location. CHRRPE was first described by Gass in 1973 (
Trans Am Ophthalmol Soc 1973;71:175–83) and is supposed to represent a slightly elevated grey mass involving the RPE, retina, and overlying vitreous, with a fan-like projection blending with the surrounding RPE covered with grey-white retinal and preretinal tissue, some with contraction, absence of RPE at the margin, and without any retinal elevation.
