Editor’s note: This is an interesting study concerning the effect of patient motivation on near vision in emmetropic pseudophakic individuals. A total of 40 patients underwent bilateral sequential cataract surgery targeting –0.5 diopters. Patients were then randomized to a motivated or control group. Patients in the motivated group were told that in order to increase their accommodative ability they should take cyclopentolate drops for the first 10 postoperative days. They were also told not to wear any reading glasses for the first 3 months to “train” their near vision. Distance glasses were prescribed at 1 month if needed. If the patient could not read at all then a maximum add-on of +1.0 was prescribed at the 1-month visit. Control patients received no additional drops or instructions.
