Editor’s note: In this review, a MEDLINE search for all case reports on sympathetic ophthalmia identified 86 patients. Sixty-two were male and the mean age was 46 years, although there was a wide age range. Injuries accounted for 47% of cases, ocular surgery was reported in 44%, with 21% undergoing pars plana vitrectomy. Overall, 95% received systemic cortical steroid therapy, which led to a 70% rate of visual improvement in the sympathizing eye.
