Compliance Issues in Glaucoma Management

Ayako Anraku, MD, and Yvonne M Buys, MD, FRCSC

Glaucoma is a chronic ocular disease requiring lifelong treatment and care to minimize optic nerve damage and visual field loss. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the greatest risk factor for both the development and the progression of glaucoma [1]. In many instances, medical therapy is the initial treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma. Laser trabeculoplasty can be considered as a first-line treatment in some patients, but is more commonly offered after medical therapy with two or three agents fails. In cases in which visual function or neural tissue is progressively lost despite maximally tolerated medical and laser therapy, glaucoma surgery is indicated [2–4].
