Editor’s note: Lack of sleep may be an important causal factor for post partum depression. The current authors postulate that the circadian production of melatonin, which reaches a maximum at approximately 3 AM, may be affected by disruptive sleep patterns associated with having newborn babies. The reduced melatonin may make it difficult for the mother to sleep and, even worse, because the melatonin appears in breast-milk, it may also make the infant less likely to sleep. Blue light has previously been found to be particularly efficacious in suppressing melatonin production.
