Editor’s note: There are a number of different models of phakic intraocular lens and the implantable Collamer lens (Visian ICL; STAAR Surgical, Nidau, Switzerland) is one of the more popular versions. ICLs offer an alternative to laser refractive surgery, especially in patients with high myopia (and hypermetropia) and thin corneas. In this study, the authors used the V4 model, which has been designed to have a higher vaulting than the V3 model, moving it away from the lens. However, this moves it closer to the pupil and there may be issues with it interfering with pupil dilation. In the past, ICLs have been criticized for causing anterior subcapsular cataract, endothelial cell loss, pigment dispersion leading to pigmentary glaucoma, and pupil block.
