Editor’s note: The treatment of all forms of fungal keratitis is difficult. Diagnosis is often delayed, the response of fungi to antifungals is often limited, and topical antifungal preparations do not penetrate the cornea easily. These authors found that a new agent, micafungin, was useful in treating yeast fungal keratitis cases that were refractory to standard treatment with topical triazoles and polyenes. They therefore conducted a study randomizing culture-proven cases of Candida fungal keratitis to topical fluconazole or topical micafungin.
