Editor’s note: In this retrospective review of 63 patients with uveitic sarcoidosis, 62% were African American and 68% were female. The African American patients presented at an earlier age (<50 years) and were more likely to have granulomatous anterior segment inflammation compared with patients of other races. Levels of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme and lysozyme were elevated in 40% and 42% of patients, respectively. In terms of imaging studies, 25 patients underwent chest X-ray and 19 underwent computed tomography, which were consistent with sarcoidosis. The biopsy sites for diagnosis were the lung in 54%, lymph nodes in 16%, skin in 11%, conjunctivae in 6%, vitreous in two, as well as a variety of other locations. Combining the serum assays and chest imaging would have identified 93% of the biopsy-proven cases in this series.
