Editor’s note: A public stigma associated with severe mental illness is its presumed direct association with violent acts. This belief is supported by the fact that research on a possible association between schizophrenia and violent crime has produced mixed results. Ten epidemiological studies that specifically examined this relationship found a four- to six-fold increased risk of violent behavior in schizophrenia patients (Curr Psychiatry Rev 2007;3:33–50), which led to the view that schizophrenia and other major mental disorders are preventable causes of violence and violent crime.
