Editor’s note: Although morbidity and mortality rates are recognized to be high in young people with eating disorders, the precise mortality rates are unknown (Psychiatr Bull 2005;29:134–6). The objective of the current study was to examine the mortality rates in patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) by means of a systematic review. The data were extracted from 36 studies reporting on 166642 patient-years of anorexia nervosa, 32 798 patient-years of bulimia nervosa, and 22 644 patient-years of EDNOS.
