Editor’s note: In a recent study, Banerjee et al. reported that antidepressants were not more effective than placebo for the treatment of patients with depression in the context of dementia (Lancet 2011;378:403–11, reviewed in this issue of CML – Psychiatry, p137–8). The authors of the current study also examined antidepressant treatment in older people with depression. The objective was to investigate the association between antidepressant treatment and potential adverse outcomes in this population.
