Editor’s note: Maternal exposure to a number of factors during pregnancy, including prenatal famine, is known to increase the risk of schizophrenia in the offspring. Circulating folate levels are decreased during famine, and it has been hypothesized that low levels of folate during pregnancy may underlie the association between prenatal famine exposure and schizophrenia.
