Editor’s note: Epoprostenol was the first prostanoid to be approved for intravenous use in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1995. A later-developed prostanoid is trepostinil, which may be administered subcutaneously or intravenously. Although intravenous prostanoids remain the most effective treatment for PAH, there is a lack of comprehensive studies assessing their use in clinical practice. Therefore, the present authors evaluated epoprostenol and trepostinil in the treatment of PAH in terms of dosing and efficacy by reviewing the current literature, and also by means of a survey of US physicians who treat patients with PAH.
