Editor’s note: Serotonin (5-HT) has been shown to stimulate pulmonary artery smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation and has thus been linked with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Other evidence links specific bone morphogenetic protein receptor-2 (BMPR2) mutations with an increased risk of PAH (Ann Med 2001;33:596–603). “Crosstalk” between these 5-HT and BMP signaling pathways has not previously been described.
