 Thorax 2009;64:778–83.

Editor’s note: Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is an incurable disease that is caused by a number of factors, including both genetic and environmental factors. Inflammation is often seen in patients with the disease, although it is not known how this inflammation comes about. The current authors report the findings from a study of 33 pediatric patients with IPAH that was carried out to determine the structural abnormalities in the lung tissue of children who were treated with intravenous prostacyclin and an endothelin receptor antagonist compared with tissue from untreated children and control children without IPAH.
