Beyond NT-proBNP: Biomarkers for the Assessment of Pulmonary Hypertension

Our knowledge of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) has been enhanced in recent years by the significant progress made in understanding the pathobiology, epidemiology, and prognosis of the disease. The recognition of risk factors and conditions associated with PAH has led to the need for a systematic diagnostic approach. In addition, multiple therapies have lately become available. Current treatment guidelines for PAH recommend goal-oriented therapy with a sequential add-on approach in patients who do not improve, or who deteriorate clinically. Therefore, it is important to identify patients at risk of developing PAH, as well as to recognize the correct timing of treatment escalation.
