Emphysema is a leading cause of disability and death characterized by areas of hyperinflation distributed throughout both lungs. While deflating through such mechanisms as lung volume reduction surgery improves exercise tolerance and prolongs life in selected patients, the risk of perioperative death and complications may contribute to underutilization.
