Prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency in rheumatoid arthritis and associations with disease severity and activity.

Kerr GS, Sabahi I, Richards JS et al.
Low vitamin D intake has been associated with the alteration of expression of genes involved in a number of cellular functions including proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis (Rheumatology [Oxford] 2009;48:210–2). Recent studies have implicated low vitamin intake as a risk factor in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and low vitamin D levels with increased disease activity and severity in patients with inflammatory arthritis. The present study examined the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency among US veterans with RA.
