Editor’s note: GAIT (the Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial was reported in
The New England Journal of Medicine in 2006 (
N Engl J Med 2006;354:795–808), and reviewed in
CML–Rheumatology 2006;25:78. The study showed no evidence of a beneficial effect of glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, or a combination of the two over placebo in relieving pain in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. In the present article, the authors describe radiological outcomes over a 24-month period in a subset of patients from the GAIT study, again finding no convincing evidence for a beneficial effect of either of these drugs.
