Spondyloarthritis

Mengshoel AM.

 Arthritis Rheum 2008;59:1439–44.

Editor’s notes: This is a qualitative study by a single author (a physiotherapist) who carried out unstructured interviews with 12 ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients and analyzed the transcripts to derive themes relating to the ways that symptoms affect the everyday lives of these individuals. The author acknowledges that the lack of validation by other researchers is a limitation of the study. However, studies such as this can be useful in identifying issues that are important to patients but which are not always easy to measure by the commonly used response criteria. They may also help to illuminate ways in which patients manage their own lifestyles to accommodate a chronic illness such as AS.
