Osteoarthritis

Snijders GF, van den Ende CH, van Riel PL et al.

Sint Maartenskliniek Hospital, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

 Ann Rheum Dis 2011;70:1191–6.

Editor’s note: Doxycycline inhibits the collagenase that cleaves type IX collagen, which is present in articular cartilage. Doxycycline has been proposed as a disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug. In a previous single trial it was found that doxycycline retarded the progression of radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee (Arthritis Rheum 2005;52:2015–25). In this trial by Snijders et al., the investigators examined whether doxycycline could reduce the symptoms of knee OA.
