Multi-institutional assessment of ureteroscopic laser papillotomy for chronic flank pain associated with papillary calcifications.

Gdor Y, Faddegon S, Krambeck AE et al.
Editor’s note: The similarity between symptoms in patients with medullary spongy kidney (MSK) and some other stone formers with chronic flank pain led some to propose ureteroscopic holmium:yttrium–aluminium–garnet laser ablation for attached calcifications and release of underlying intraductal stones in patients with chronic flank pain. This procedure is referred to as ureteroscopic laser papillotomy. Chronic flank pain is described as fairly constant, which is different from the typical episodic colic associated with free intrarenal or ureteric calculi.
